- I logged into the William Alden home page. They deal in tools for wood
- working and stuff. While there I got a JAVA ERROR. I ignored it. I sent
- them my name and address so they could send me a catalog. That
- seemed to work just fine. Right after that my computer locked up solid.
- Couldn't do anything. I re-Booted and then Windows would not recognize my
- modem. Went to DOS and it worked fine with my DOS Comm program. Windows
- was no good. Said the modem wasn't there. Now, I've been using this
- configuration, just like this, for months! Haven't touched a thing.
- Yet, in CONTROL PANEL comm 1 was now selected instead of comm 2. Also in
- TERMINAL setup my hardware control was set to NONE. Reset that to
- HARDWARE. That seem to fix everything. I'm working again.
-
- Now, I ask you, how the hell did that happen?
-
- While I'm on the subject, I have a lot of faith in the brilliance of our
- technical people; but, will some one please explain to me how the science
- (?) of modems has gotten so far out of hand. There is so damn much
- confusion. The user can change too many things. My sportster has 8 dip
- switches on the back of it. Truthfully, I've used $100,000 pieces of very
- sophisticated electronic gear that didn't have 8 switches on it. On top
- of that you can control lots more functions by keying in commands. What's
- going on with these things. My whole damn $3500 computer only has three
- switches on it! I can't help but believe that the manufacturers are
- trying to make modems as complicated as possible. I say "REMEMBER KISS"
- (Keep It Simple, Stupid)! Boy I hope this new Universal Serial Bus will
- help with some of our interface problems.
-
- Sorry to bend all your ears... Jim
